How to Prepare for Your Endovenous Laser Ablation Treatment

Woman's legs with varicose veins in Walnut Creek, CA

If you’re tired of varicose veins, endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is a top solution. However, proper preparation can ensure a smooth procedure and faster recovery. This minimally invasive treatment effectively closes off problematic veins, improving circulation and appearance. Here’s what you need to do before your appointment.

Elite Vein Specialists, the Varicose Vein Center of Excellence, is at the forefront of minimally invasive vein treatments, including EVLA. Under the expert care of Dr. Meg O’Hare, who personally understands the challenges of vein disease, patients receive compassionate, individualized treatment in a warm and supportive setting.

Follow Pre-Treatment Instructions

Your doctor will give specific guidelines based on your health and medical history. Be sure to:

  • Avoid blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen) unless otherwise directed.
  • Stop smoking and minimize alcohol intake, as they can slow healing.
  • Hydrate well before the procedure, but avoid excessive caffeine.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Choose loose, breathable attire for your procedure. You’ll likely need to wear a compression stocking afterward, so shorts can make application easier.

Plan for Transportation

While EVLA is an outpatient procedure, some patients experience temporary numbness or leg discomfort post-treatment. As a precaution, arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home.

Eat a Light Meal

There’s no need for fasting, but a light meal before your procedure can prevent nausea. Avoid heavy, greasy foods that tend to cause discomfort.

Bring Your Compression Stockings

Your provider may recommend medical-grade compression stockings to aid circulation and reduce swelling. Have them ready to wear immediately after treatment.

Stay Active But Avoid Strenuous Exercise

Light walking is encouraged before and after treatment to promote healthy blood flow. However, avoid intense workouts or heavy lifting 24-48 hours before your appointment.

Ask Questions

If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to ask your provider. Knowing what to expect can ease any pre-procedure anxiety.
